The Collector

Please don't let the "From The Writers Of Saw...blah blah" comment sway you. This is a contemporary horror masterpiece. Here's my review of The Collector (out on DVD April 6th):

Finally! It seems an American director took notes while viewing Inside, Martyrs, Them and Frontier(s) (all essential viewing). While I absolutely abhor the Saw franchise, I welcome Marcus Dunstan to the small circle of slick new-breed horror directors that aren't afraid to give it to you raw. It's all about atmosphere here... The cinematography, acting and soundtrack are all extremely well crafted. I was sold as soon as the opening credits lurched onto the screen with a punch of bass-heavy industrial swagger (reminiscent of the opening credits to David Fincher's Se7en). Spiders and wasps are strategically placed throughout the plot groundwork of this film to foreshadow the predator vs. prey onslaught that is about to ensue. The Collector is absolutely not for the faint of heart... Animals are killed, fingers are detached, fish hooks are baited with flesh, guts are spilled, orifices sewn shut and just like its French predecessors the ending will NOT leave a cheery smile on your face. I highly recommend this to anyone that's into cold, calculated, brooding and brutal horror.
